Friends and Family
What is included in a map tells us what is important to its maker. One of the most common features in the hundreds of maps made by the young people are detailed, carefully drawn depictions of friends, family and pets (and cows!).
Many maps include representations of the homes of friends and family members (particularly nana and grandads), as well as other important places like the MetroCentre, the Hoppings, Walker Dome, St. James Park, KFC and McDonalds. Sometimes the maps hint at sad stories, like the frequent reoccurrence of the cemetery in Heaton, and sometimes one person’s negative experience whilst fishing with their Dad can turn the whole of Gateshead red for an entire class and even their teacher!
